Spotlight on Ghost In The Machine
Ghost in The Machine

One of the newest and most promising modifications on the Deus Ex scene (they even have their own fan site) is the Ghost In The Machine mod, headed up by randomatic. Existence is hard in the DX community, with most mods showing up DOA, but GITM has survived long enough to get many peoples attention, get some beautiful work done, and leak all the juicy secrets to us!

Ghost In The Machine will not follow the traditional level to level gameplay of most DX mods, the game will take place in The Free State of Los Angeles, the player will be free to explore the entire city, which will serve as a hub for other indoor levels. You will take on the guise of Thelonious, a mercenary for hire, and will be able to take jobs from a variety of different factions around the city, there will be no fixed path, so the player has complete freedom as to what he wishes to do. We are told that the finished product will offer approximately 20-40 hours of gameplay, possibly more, if you choose to explore all the side paths.

GITM will completely change many aspects of the interface; there are now 27 skills to choose from, as well as about 48 AUGS (now called cyberware). Both the AUG and skills system have been heavily modified and we are told we will be very impressed with how they work. The GITM team has even been working on changing the blob-like shadows in the original game to something much more realistic, although we couldn't pry to much more out of them.

Amazingly, they even plan to implement Full Motion Videos! No more limited cut scenes, we're talking fully rendered videos, apparently they are able to do this by modifying DX native code, but however they manage to do it, it will undoubtedly be suitably impressive.

As for a demo, they will not be releasing a playable demo, due to the hub-style game world, but they may release a tech demo to let us have a look at some of their new features, "such as vehicles, the cyber world, some cyberware, magic, etc." So keeps your eyes on their site, and get keep those mouse fingers exercised!

For more infomation on GITM visit their official website, their fan site, or email randomatic.
